For 3D visualization of the TMJ, cone beam computed tomography is the imaging method of choice. It uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam that rotates around the head to collect data and reconstruct a 3D volume of the joint. This lets you view the condyle, fossa, and articular eminence from multiple planes—axial, sagittal, and coronal—so you can accurately assess bone morphology, degenerative changes, erosions, and asymmetries. It also provides high spatial resolution with typically lower radiation exposure than conventional CT, making it practical for detailed TMJ assessment.

The other options don’t provide true 3D X-ray data for the TMJ. A cephalometric machine captures 2D skull images used mainly for orthodontic measurements. A panoramic machine gives a single 2D view of the jaws and teeth. MRI, while excellent for soft tissue like the disc, is not an X-ray modality and doesn’t provide the same 3D bony imaging as cone beam CT.
